Creative co-design for sustainability: Deep Blue at Rome Future Week

The European STARHAUS project, of which Deep Blue is part, brings an experiential event to imagine and design sustainable futures.

On September 19th, during Rome Future Week , the European project STARHAUS will be held at Talent Garden Ostiense in Rome for a day of experimentation, creativity, and participation. Organized by Deep Blue and the University of Siena , the event “Creative Co-design for Sustainability” will offer visitors an immersive experience to explore future scenarios and contribute to the design of sustainable, inclusive, and desirable solutions.

An open laboratory for sustainability

STARHAUS is a research and innovation initiative that combines creativity, research, and participation to address sustainability challenges with an interdisciplinary approach. For Deep Blue, sustainability is not a separate field, but a guiding principle that spans all sectors—from artificial intelligence to aviation, manufacturing, mobility, and space—integrating environmental, social, and human factors.

Interactive experiences and participatory design

During the day, participants will be involved in a participatory design journey that will lead them through various experiences. Wearing a virtual reality headset , they will be immersed in eight urban scenarios where an innovative machine for creating customizable products is placed in built-up areas, evaluating its integration into public spaces.

Inside the exhibition space, a life-size print of the machine—three meters by two meters—will be available to stimulate curiosity and gather questions, observations, and ideas through stickers and notes. Completing the experience, a “values game” will invite visitors to reflect on the ethical and technological aspects of the proposal, arranging thematic cards on a table that maps priorities, expectations, and concerns related to new technological services.

Co-design as a tool for transformation

The STARHAUS method reflects Deep Blue’s approach: combining applied research and a systems vision , exploring future scenarios and transforming them into actionable strategies. The event will be an opportunity to actively engage citizens, businesses, and institutions in designing sustainable solutions, confirming co-design as a powerful tool for change.
