Deep Blue dissemination event on RPAS and AI in Aviation

RPAS and AI in Aviation – Six SESAR ER projects together to present their results

We are pleased to announce that Deep Blue will organize and moderate the event on RPAS and AI in Aviation, on the 3rd and 4th of November 2022, in Rome (Italy).

This in-person event aims to bring together six exploratory research projects financed by the SESAR Joint Undertaking programme, and to show their results that enriched SESAR’s progress, giving great contribution to the domain, both for drones and AI integration

The joint event will focus on the European aviation panorama, bringing together the latest developments of projects such as INVIRCAT, URClearED, SAFELAND, SafeOPS, MAHALO and ARTIMATION, who researched these two topics in the last two years and a half, with results that really deserve deeper highlighting.

Ready to explore the future horizons of Aviation?

With reference to the aviation sector, RPAS and AI explainability are two themes that need to be further explored. In fact, their integration into civil airspace will represent both a great challenge and an unprecedented development, according to the reports of the two European projects OPTICS and OPTICS2.

“The integration of RPAS and drones into civil airspace needs urgent research, […] together with the development of a new CONOPS that accommodates the rapidity and scale of developments occurring with RPAS/UAS and their impending integration into airspace” – From OPTICS final report.

The projects are focused on assessing whether European aviation is on the right path towards Flightpath 2050. Their research highlighted that automated drones and UAM vehicles would have to rely on seamless integration of automated flight controls, although achieving these goals will definitely lead to another level of complexity in which Human Factors will play a significant role.

“Finding the right Human-AI partnerships will be key to future aviation safety. The Intelligent Assistant (IA) in the cockpit and on the ground will be the crucial stepping stone toward fuller Artificial Intelligence (AI) by 2050. Research is urgently needed to determine how humans and AIs can work together productively and safely, including human supervision and recovery in case of ‘aberrant behaviour’ by AI systems”- As it is said in the OPTICS2 report, published in 2021.

An event organized and moderated by Deep Blue

During the event, our proficient experts will first present the six projects.

In particular, Damiano Taurino, R&D Project Manager at Deep Blue with expertise in the drones sector, will open the event on the first day,  November the 3rd, when INVIRCAT, URClearED and Safeland will present their research activities and results focused on the RPAS integration in the civil air space.

Finally, Stefano Bonelli, Head of Innovative Human Factors at Deep Blue, will be pleased to introduce the projects SafeOPS, Mahalo and Artimation, which will show their ongoing research within the human-AI teaming in aviation framework on November the 4rd.
